Fuel cells are solid-state electrochemical power conversion devices, similar to batteries except that the reactants are continuously supplied – they are “recharged” physically with fresh reactants rather than with electricity. The fuel cell was invented in the UK by Sir William Grove in 1839 and was first developed to engineering reality in Cambridge (England) by Dr Tom Bacon in the 1940s-60s.
